Advocacy Center Updates from Mrs. Tanner:
We’ve had an amazing start to the school year, but I can’t believe September is already here! The last week of August, students had their first lesson of the year with me in the library. This lesson revolved around learning about the Percy’s Place Buckets that are in each classroom as well as other areas within the building. These buckets serve as our peace or calm down corners and are filled with the exact same materials throughout the building so that no matter where a child may be, they are able to use the tools inside to calm themselves down if they become dysregulated. This lesson also includes parts of the brain and how and why our brains react the way they do in specific situations.
Students are taught that this bucket contains “tools” not “toys.” When they use bucket to calm down, they are working to “fix” their dysregulated emotions and “build” a strong emotional foundation so that the next time they feel a certain way they can calm themselves without the aid of the bucket. In the bucket there is a worksheet they use to process their emotions and guide them through the steps to calm down. This worksheet then comes to me, and I will find a time to follow up with the student.
One of the biggest takeaways from this introductory lesson is that we all flip our lids sometimes, but it is our job to become self-aware and learn to control our emotions rather than the emotions controlling us.
Please feel free to view my presentation and watch the videos that were used in the lesson and contact me with any questions.

Green Committee News!
Unicycle Donations
Families, we’re a UniCycle School! That means you can donate your students’ outgrown school clothing items in the collection basket on the PPE front porch, and we’ll fill our UniCycle Closet so that it’s ready to be used by any student here who’s had a summer growth spurt or could use an extra shirt or two. If we collect more than we need, we send it to @Unicycle.nashville and they get it to another school closet or direct to a student experiencing homelessness in the @mnps_hero program. Keep your closets cleaned out and we’ll make sure your items go on to live their next best life – it’s a win-win for all!
Come Have Lunch!
Parents, grandparents and special friends are welcome to eat lunch with students! When signing-up, we also ask that you only sign-up for one day at this time. Thank you for your help and we hope to see you for lunch soon. Sign up to come eat lunch with your student!
