2nd Grade Newsletter: 10/25/24

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • What region of the United States are you learning about in your new ELA module? 
  • What is the name of the flat, grassy land on which buffalo/bison roamed and grazed?
  • How did the Native Americans take care of the prairie?
  • What happened when the settlers came to the prairie?
  • What new spellings have you learned for the /oe/ (long o) sound? 
  • How can you use a number line to tell the difference between two numbers?
  • What is a democracy? Do we live in a democracy?

 

What 2nd Graders Are Learning Next Week:

 ELA (English Language Arts):

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 2: The American West
    • Essential Question: What was life like in the West for early Americans? 
    • Learning Goals:
      • Use the words and illustrations in The Buffalo Are Back to determine the text’s essential meaning. 
      • Express understanding of how the American Indians and early Americans impacted the prairie in the early American West. 
      • Categorize topic-specific vocabulary to make real-life connections between words. 
      • Understand and apply correct structure to an informative paragraph with a topic statement, evidence, and concluding statement and include text-specific words and phrases that enhance meaning.
      • Identify real-life connections between the concept of impact and topic-specific vocabulary.
      • Use a Wonder Wheel (question words: who, what, when, where, why, how) to ask and answer questions about Plains Indians.
      • With support, identify and explain the purpose of frequently occurring irregular plural nouns. 
      • Recount the main topic and key details from pages 10-12 of Plains Indians. 
      • Analyze how points support a topic statement about nomadic and non-nomadic Plains Indians. 
      • Form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns. 

 

  • Tennessee Foundational Skills:
    • Read, write, and sort words with different spellings for /ie/ sound (‘i_e’ as in bite, ‘ie’ as in tie, ‘i’ as in Friday)
    • Read one-syllable words
    • Read two-syllable words with /ie/ sound
    • Unscramble sentences
    • Correct capitalization and punctuation
    • Identify common and proper nouns in sentences
    • Plural nouns
    • Ask and answer questions about key details in the a decodable text that incorporates the letter-sound correspondences taught
    • Spelling words: knotted, knitting, knocked, wringing, wronged, whipped, whined, quitting, quacked, all
