2nd Grade Newsletter: 11/01/24

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • Who impacted the prairie in a positive way?
  • Who impacted the prairie in a negative way? 
  • Who impacted the prairie negatively at first and then positively later? 
  • What connections can you make between the American Indians, the buffalo, and the prairie?
  • What new spellings have you learned for the /ie/ (long i) sound? 
  • What is the difference between a common and proper noun? Can you give examples?
  • What is the largest number you can make with the digits 7, 9, 3? What is the smallest number you can make with those same digits?
  • How many hundreds are the same as 50 tens? How many tens are the same as 6 hundreds?
  • What is sound?

 

What 2nd Graders Are Learning Next Week:

 ELA (English Language Arts):

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 2: The American West
    • Essential Question: What was life like in the West for early Americans? 
    • Learning Goals:
      • Identify main topics and details and explain how they are used to organize understanding of informative text.
      • Demonstrate how to choose points when writing informative text.
      • Record evidence and choose strong points for the Focusing Question Task.
      • Form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns.
      • Use context clues and text features to determine the meaning of the academic and content vocabulary nomadic
      • Pull from a variety of strategies (context clues, root words, and glossary) to build an understanding of the academic and content word reservation
      • Explain what life was like for Plains Indians while practicing how to vary inflection in discussions. 
      • Express understanding of content knowledge and new skills, citing evidence from Plains Indians.

 

  • Tennessee Foundational Skills:
    • Identify words with the /u/ (short u) and /ue/ (long u) sounds
    • Read, write, and sort words with different spellings for /ue/ sound (‘u_e’ as in cute, ‘u’ as in unit, ‘ue’ as in cue)
    • Read words with different spellings for /aw/ sound (‘aw’ as in paw, ‘au’ as in haul, ‘augh’ as in caught
