2nd Grade Newsletter: 01/17/25

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • How do different authors tell the story of John Henry’s life?
  • What are collective nouns? What are some examples of collective nouns?
  • What sound does the ‘y’ make in in gym? What sound does the ‘y’ make in fly? What sound does the ‘y’ make in funny?
  • What operation (addition or subtraction) would you use for a comparison word problem?
  • What is friction? 
  • How can you make an object travel faster and farther?

 ELA (English Language Arts):

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 2: The American West
    • Essential Question: What was life like in the West for early Americans? 
    • Learning Goals:
      • Collaboratively draft an informative paragraph comparing droughts in The Buffalo Are Back and The Legend of the Bluebonnet.
      • Draft an informative paragraph comparing a legendary figure with real-life pioneers.
      • Revise an informative paragraph with a focus on points and topic-specific words.
  • Wit and Wisdom Module 3: Civil Rights Heroes
    • Essential Question: How can people respond to injustice?
    • Learning Goals: 
      • Ask questions and make observations about Ruby Bridges Goes to School: My True Story.
      • Ask and answer questions about Martin Luther King Jr. and the March on Washington using a variety of question words.
      • Make observations about how a historical photograph connects to a text.
      • Explore the meaning of the word injustice, formed when a known prefix is added to a known word.
      • Use sentence-level context to determine the meaning of the words protest and refuse.

 

  • Tennessee Foundational Skills:
    • Identify different sounds and spellings
    • Read words with the ‘al’ spelling (as in talk)
    • Ask and answer questions about key details in the student reader
